Meagan was enjoying the formal 17th century social outing when she was abruptly whisked to an English farm of 1820. Time travel can be tricky.<\/p>\n

The young man dealt the draft horse a couple of affectionate whacks that echoed off the nearby barns. The horse swung his mighty head around, gently lipping the man\u2019s sleeve. \u201cSay, Martin, could one of your hands bring him around? I\u2019ll pay a half-day\u2019s wages.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have any hands available, Chadwick.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about the young lady there?\u201d<\/p>\n

Both men turned to look at Meagan. She smiled and gave an embarrassed wave. Pink satin was hardly farm apparel.<\/p>\n

\u201cNever seen her. Must have strayed by.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s slicked up for something.\u201d The younger man called to Meagan: \u201cYou, there! Not lost, are you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, just made a wrong turn.\u201d Meagan was mortified to be standing in a field in such a dress. \u201cCould you point me to town?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTown?\u201d The men looked at each other. \u201cThere\u2019s a mill up that road a ways. Did you walk here?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI-I was dropped off.\u201d She looked down the long, tidy driveway.<\/p>\n

The men exchanged another glance. The younger, Chadwick, shrugged and strode over. \u201cI have my business, I suppose you have yours. Say though, if you would follow my carriage with this horse there\u2019s two pence and a meal waiting. No need to get dirty, and it would be a real favor. I can give you a ride somewhere once we get the horse home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meagan hesitated. Her real wish was to hide.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on, now, don\u2019t be afraid of him. He\u2019s big, but he won\u2019t hurt anything bigger than a fly. Then take a meal with the family and I will get you where you want to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

I doubt it<\/em>, she thought, but smiled and agreed.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
