I am so happy you could join me.\u201d Thin, withered hands motioned to a facing couch. \u201cNelson, please show them in.\u201d Jennifer grasped Meagan\u2019s hand firmly as the butler led them into the room.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\">The elderly woman\u2019s smile mapped lines across her pale features. Her silver hair was pulled back to reveal a strand of white pearls looped over a simple charcoal dress. A bejeweled cane leaned against the arm of the couch. \u201cI am Mrs. Bridgestone, and you must be Jennifer. It is so good of you to come.\u201d The woman smiled knowingly at Meagan. \u201cI believe your daughter and I have already met.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\">\u201cI am pleased to meet you, Mrs. Bridgestone,\u201d Jennifer said graciously. \u201cMy daughter did not tell me you two were acquainted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\">\u201cWe met on a delightful occasion last summer. How is your beautiful young horse, dear child? I won\u2019t make the mistake of saying \u2018pony\u2019 again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\">Meagan was about to say the horse was fine, thank you, when her mother interrupted. \u201cWe sold her two weeks ago,\u201d Jennifer said firmly. \u201cWe had an offer too good to pass up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\">Meagan looked at her mother in surprise. <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\">\u201cYes, so I understand. I was sorry to hear that.\u201d The old woman looked past her guests and motioned to the butler. He carried forward a silver tea service.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\">Jennifer kept her smile fixed. \u201cYour home is so lovely, Mrs. Bridgestone. Though I must say, I am confused about the nature of this meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\">\u201cOf course you are, dear.
