On the patio, still in her nightgown, she stopped in shock. The filly\u2019s bridle was pulled halfway off and both reins had snapped. Cuts covered her lower legs and a scrape along one shoulder was crusted with blood.<\/p>\n<p>Promise\u2019s nostrils dilated as she raised her head in jerks, backing a step. \u201cEasy, girl,\u201d Meagan soothed, approaching. \u201cLet me clean you up and get you some food.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am afraid there won\u2019t be time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meagan turned to see an unknown man standing beside Mr. Wells. The trainer held the most incongruous of objects\u2014a gleaming handgun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour horse came to say goodbye,\u201d Mr. Wells said evenly. \u201cShe\u2019s caused a bit of trouble.\u201d As he stepped forward, Promise tensed and blew out strongly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did she escape?\u201d the second man asked anxiously. \u201cThe animal is a Houdini! Across all the traffic, too!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Wells waved his gun toward Meagan. \u201cIt looks like that headpiece is about finished. Why don\u2019t you find something else? Fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do wish this wasn\u2019t necessary,\u201d the second man told her apologetically. \u201cI wish I\u2019d never <em>seen <\/em>a betting booth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Wells waved his gun again and Meagan ran out into the tack room, thinking in panicked flashes. Her parents were still upstairs asleep.
