She shuddered each time and sat back. Of course, having an Angel for a horse makes something like this quite normal, she rationalized. The whole experience was like a \u2026 a <em>gift.<\/em> Yes! A not-very-good one. Maybe now was the time to find Promise, while the slugs were asleep.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOh!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A sudden thump on the rock announced one of the creatures, and Meagan was looking into the intense blue eyes of the staring girl. Meagan backed against the cliff wall. \u201cHello. Nice to see you again.\u201d She looked up. There were no heads, at least none visible. \u201cWhy aren\u2019t you sleeping like the others?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl stared back silently, but made no noise or motion.<\/p>\n<p><em>I want to go home,<\/em> Meagan thought desperately. She glanced cautiously over the edge. Only bones, ash and lingering smoke remained of the bonfire. Pecking birds scoured the rocks. Meagan turned back to the girl. \u201cThis is all my fault and I know you can\u2019t understand, but I am very, very sorry \u2026 oh, <em>please<\/em> don\u2019t be mad!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl watched silently, moving her eyebrows to mimic Meagan\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt won\u2019t be hard to start over,\u201d Meagan said reasonably. \u201cThe horses are still here \u2026 or, well, they <em>were<\/em> before you ate them. But you could find more and, and, build a corral. It\u2019s simple once you know how. Horses are horses. Your family or whatever that is could do something with their lives instead of\u2014\u201d Her hand went to her mouth. \u201cI sound just like my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl\u2019s hand went to her own mouth, her eyes wide and unaccusing.<\/p>\n<p>People would have to go through history all over again, Meagan thought dismally.
