Meagan crept forward. A man was crouched at the base of the knoll, sobbing. He wore chain mail over coarse brown fabric. Next to him lay a shield and a long, tapered, brightly-painted wooden pole: a knight\u2019s lance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">She cleared her throat delicately. \u201cExcuse me, is something wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">The man whirled and rose to his feet, and Meagan saw two things immediately. First, the man was not much more than a boy, and second, there was a sword strapped to his side. The young man brandished the metal blade, then on another thought grabbed his shield. He took a fierce stance, wiping his red eyes discreetly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">\u201cI am sorry, I did not see you before,\u201d Meagan said cautiously. \u201cAre you lost?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">The young man sniffed. He was blonde-haired and his plain, wide features were raw from rubbing. \u201cCheval go,\u201d he said miserably.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\"><em>Zhivago?<\/em> Meagan enunciated clearly: \u201cDo you mean as in \u2018Doctor,\u2019 by any chance? It\u2019s one of my mother\u2019s favorite movies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">\u201cNie, nie!\u201d He pointed to the bridle Meagan carried. <em>\u201cCheval!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, this?\u201d Meagan held up the simple headgear. \u201cIt is not a shovel &#8230; it\u2019s a <em>bri<\/em>-dle. For my horse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">\u201cTak, tak! <em>Horse!<\/em>\u201d The young man launched into an excited string of what sounded like gibberish.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">Meagan held up her hand. \u201cI am sorry, I do not understand. Do you speak English?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">\u201cSmall!\u201d The young man nodded eagerly. \u201cEnglish mother once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">\u201cEnglish. Mother. Once,\u201d she repeated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">The young man pointed off into the distance. \u201cHorse go. Mens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">She straightened. \u201cWhat do you mean, horse <em>go<\/em>? My horse or your horse?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">He pointed at himself sadly, saying, \u201cHorse go.\u201d Then he pointed at Meagan. \u201cHorse <em>go.<\/em>\u201d He made an angry face and pantomimed kicking, as if imitating a certain ill-tempered pony.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">This person had no idea what he was saying. Meagan put her hands to her mouth and whistled the call that always brought Targa trotting. The pony did not come. Again she tried &#8230; the call sounded shrill and futile.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">After a moment silent except for sounds of birds in the trees, the young man shyly cleared his throat.
