The horse grunted and raised his head. \u201c<em>Ach<\/em>, see! Much the calm horse!\u201d Gathering that Meagan was still unimpressed, the trader bore his attention down on the young knight. Great gestures accompanied an inventory of the horse\u2019s virtues, given while Henryk ran a hand down each of the horse\u2019s stovepipe legs and nodded appreciatively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">\u201cHenryk,\u201d Meagan complained, \u201cthis horse would be much too slow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">The trader wagged a finger. \u201c<em>Fraulein, bitte!<\/em> Of course, knight he needs such horse. How so he conquest Tournament St. John and no horse?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">Henryk looked up with a new light in his eyes. Meagan softened. Perhaps, she thought charitably, the horse\u2019s lop ears did not hang out of laziness. Perhaps the white blaze across his forehead made him look simpler than he really was.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\"><em>\u201cAch! Der holzkopf!\u201d<\/em> the trader screamed as the huge animal settled on his foot. After being slapped repeatedly, the horse removed his hoof reluctantly, as if being deprived of a soft place to stand. The trader recovered and patted the horse\u2019s shoulder as if nothing had happened. Tears stood in his eyes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">Henryk crossed his arms, still nodding in approval.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">\u201cHenryk,\u201d she pleaded, \u201cremember we have no money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">\u201c<em>Fraulein, bitte.<\/em> Pleasing.\u201d The trader spread his arms. \u201cKnights need horse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">Meagan walked around the huge beast. The horse\u2019s eyes were small in his coarse, heavy head. His throatlatch was undefined and the upright \u201cmutton\u201d shoulders meant he would offer an uncomfortable, jarring trot. \u201cNo Henryk, I think you can do better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">\u201cThe horse from this finest bloodlines!\u201d the trader insisted with a flourish. \u201cHis fathers have sweep this infidel from Holies Lands! <em>Ach!<\/em> See the chest, it is large\u2014so! This animal can carry too much weight. He stop at nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">\u201cHe is about to fall over asleep. Henryk, please warn the man about the Tatars, and we should go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:10px;\">But Henryk was stroking the horse\u2019s nose with growing confidence. The animal\u2019s eyes were half-closed and he was beginning to doze. Seeing the knight\u2019s interest, the trader dismissed Meagan. \u201cNow we set price,\u201d the man said firmly.
